What is Google Driverless Car (PPT Report & Analysis) 2021 (Download PPT)

Driverless cars (like – Google driverless car), no doubt, are the future of transportation. Companies like Tesla and Google are masters of innovation here.

Many automobile companies have been researching a lot in this domain. Some got the hack, or few failed to make a truly driverless car.

Surprisingly, one of the successful company is Google. Yes, the domain on which you are browsing and reading this piece of information. Google is working on the driverless less car since 2009 and successfully made one.

What is Google Driverless Car & Idea behind this Innovation?

Google has always showcased his latest innovations and new products to the world. One of the advance and out of the box idea was a driverless car. The idea was to make people’s life easy and safe. Besides, the company was trying to solve mobility and environment problems.

And guess what? The company succeed and created curiosity in the autonomous vehicle. Resultant, many companies have thought in this segment and incorporated the tech into their range of the vehicle. Though research is going on to make this tech better and better.

At starting, the autonomous vehicle project was owned by the Alphabet (Google). Later on, in December 2016, it became a stand-alone company known as Waymo. So, what drives this car?

Let’s take a look behind the tech of Google autonomous car. Also, as I stated above, I have created a Google driverless car PPT & PDF which you can download for later reference. Ok, enough talk, let’s jump to Google self-driving car technology!

Google Driverless Car Technology & Types of equipment

After extensive research and development, the engineers at Google (Waymo) revealed the world’s first fully driverless car in 2015. The company took many people for a test ride and noted their experience for the first time. Soon after, Waymo tweaked the tech and did a further test to make it eligible for open public roads.

Every person that experienced the ride of the first driverless car had only one question, and I guess you also want to ask that what is an autonomous car and how this works? But before heading behind the science of this autonomous vehicle, let’s find out how Google’s driverless car work?

How Google Driverless Car Works?

Autonomous sounds simple but holds one of the complex science with the start of the art equipment. If we discuss the working then I can explain it via a short example, please allow me to brief it to you!

Autonomous vehicle functionality is a combination of sensors and hardware connected to it. Let’s take an example of braking, VW launched the automatic braking way before any automobile manufacturer. In case of any mishap or obstacle, this functionality had enabled the car to brake automatically.

So, to make an autonomous vehicle, you need to drop some of the functionalities on auto mode. To do so, just combine the right sensors to diagnose and different functionalities like steering wheel, parking sensors, cruise control, etc. Now, all you need is the right framework with motors, power source and other essential spares.

Google Maps

Google Driverless Car Using Google Map

One of the essential app to navigate on the App and Play store. It gives you the freedom and helps to navigate anywhere in the world. So, for the purpose of navigating on roads, Google driverless car used Maps to perform different functionalities:

  • Speed Limits

The Goole Map helped in the interaction of the car with GPS and synced the speed limits.

  • Upcoming Intersection or obstacles

One of the significant challenge for any autonomous car. The manufacturer used the map to see if there is any obstacle and navigated the car on the right path.

  • Traffic Report

After tackling with Obstacle and intersection, the car has another responsibility to collect traffic report via Maps. This activity was performed to calculate the time and navigate accordingly.

  • Collisions Protection

Collision feature works in-sync with Map & Radar. The functionality of Radars is to give information of the obstacle/intersections, and the Map has to navigate accordingly.

  • Directions

This is the most used feature of the Map. The Google driverless car used the latitude and longitude in-sync with different sensors, traffic report, collisions and other vital data to check directions and navigate on autonomous mode.

Hardware Sensors & Radars

First and the most important thing of an autonomous vehicle is the set of sensors and radars. These equipments collect and manipulate the data to feed various responders.

They help any autonomous car to connect to the real-time environment condition and give real-time data like position, temperature, obstacle, etc. Let’s discuss the about most important sensors of Google driverless car.

  • LIDAR

Lidar also known as LADAR, is the core equipment of the system. It works on optical remote sensing technology that measures the distance using laser light and makes a digital 3D representations of the target. In this particular car, the scanning capability is 60 meters (197 feet).

  • Video Camera (Set Of 8+ Camera, 360 & Night V)

Video camera has been used to detect upcoming obstacles like traffic. That’s not all, with the help of AI and machine learning, the camera is capable of recognising moving objects like pedestrians, animals, vehicles, etc.

  • Distance Sensor

Also known as Radar, this system helps the car to see and detect anything in a particular diameter. The radar scans the area in real-time and returns signals to a dish via a transmitter.

  • Position Estimator

Position estimator (shaft encoder) also known as wheel encoder is an electro-mechanical device that determines as well as converts motion of the wheel into digital signals. This activity helps the system to determine the vehicle’s location, speed and track of every moment.

Here, GPS comes into action and works in sync with shaft encoder. Both together works to return the precise location of the vehicle with time.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial Intelligence In Car

AI is the backbone of the whole system and works as the mind of the Google driverless car. The engineers at Google trained the system to scan obstacle and drive accordingly. This system helps to determine various things; some of them are:

  • Speed of the vehicle
  • Diagnose when to slow, stop and start the car
  • Steering control
  • Camera and radar controls

How These Equipment Work Together To Make Google Driverless Car?

Combining all of the equipment, sensors and technology, here are the steps to understand the working of this autonomous car:

  • Install motors with a power source (batteries)
  • Now, you have to activate accelerator and take control of brake pedal with steering wheel
  • Control and coordination of motor form CPU (trained using AI & ML)
  • Take feedback from LIDAR to detect objects and distance
  • Also, sync all cameras to diagnose things like traffic lights and other things
  • When all things get aligned, CPU will take-on over the car and manage using algorithms

Google Driverless Car PPT FAQs

When did Google make the self-driving car?

The project of Google self-driving car was started in 2009. It took more than 6 years to complete the car from scratch to prototype and a final version for roads.

How much does a Google self-driving car cost?

The manufacturer has not revealed the actual cost of the project except the fact that the company spent more than $75,000 for each lidar system. After the acquisition by Waymo, the cost of the car went down by 90 percent.

Is Google self-driving car safe?

No automobile manufacturer can take a 100% guarantee. Autonomous is a continuous research and development field. Various automobile companies including Google, Waymo and Telsa are working to make the driverless car safer on roads.
