5. Hennessey Venom GT: 270.4 mph

The fifth fastest car on the list is the Venom GT. The supercar is designed and developed by Hennessy Performance in Texas, USA. This is not only the fastest supercar from the manufacturer that broke the speed record. Well, we have its sibling too. You will get to know late…

Hennessy Venom GT has broken the world speed record back on March 25, 2016. The top speed was tested on the occasion of the company’ 25th anniversary at California’ Naval Air station. And guess what? Venom did break. The supercar recorded a top speed of 270.479 mph (435.29 km/h).

Hennessey Venom GT

Well, wait! Records don’t stop here. Before setting this world speed record, the Venom GT claimed the Guinness World Record for the fastest road-legal car in the world. This record was set on January  21, 2013. The American supercar recorded 0 – 300 km/h in just 13.63 seconds whereas 0 – 322 km/h came under 14.51 seconds.

So, how did Hennessey Venom GTis broke two records simultaneously?

Hennessey as a brand is known for its range of custom and performance vehicles. Let’s see what they tweaked in Venom GT!

Engine – The Hennessey has used a customised Lotus motor engine. This mid-mounted 7.0 L V8 engine boasts a maximum power of 1,244 hp & 1,566 Nm of max torque.

Aerodynamics – Since the supercar is based on the Lotus Elise. The manufacturer has modified the whole structure from scratch just to dominate aerodynamics. Everything from the roof, doors, side panels, cockpit, flooring, and etc has been reworked to make the Venom GT as light-weight as possible. Resultant, the GT has a curb weight of 1,244 kg which is equivalent to any 1.2-litre class sedan.

With that mechanical stuff, the GT also gets an aero system with a self-adjusting rear wing to keep it stick with the road.

Weight – After all custom-build solutions, the Hennessey’ engineers got a good achievement to reduce the weight of Venom GT. The manufacturer has saved lots of weight during the customization. It gets a full carbon-fibre body and wheels, a light-weight cockpit design and equipment, and more. Combing all of the efforts, Venom GT measures 1,244 kg only (curb weight).

Tyres – Body, engine & transmission were in their place. Now the manufacturer needed a great set of tyres that will help to address challenges during the world speed record. Michelin, as one of the best tyre manufacturers in the world, helped Hennessey. Both the manufacturer designed and developed a good set of Michelin Pilot 2 tyres.

Hennessey Venom GT Top Speed & Acceleration

0-60 mph 2.7 seconds
0-100 mph                5.6 seconds
0-300 km/h 13.63 seconds – Guinness World Record
0-200 mph 14.51 seconds – Hypercar World Record

Looks like the manufacturers has worked hard in weight reduction. Resultant, the Hennessy Venom GT has an amazing acceleration of 0-60 under 2.7 seconds. When it comes to 0-100 mph, the supercar behaves like an anti-continental missile and does it under 5.6 seconds. Except for that top speed record, the car owns a Guinness World Record for the fastest acceleration and a Hypercar World Record to cover 0-200 mph under 14.51 seconds. Did I tell you that Venom can sprint up to 270.49 mph?

Mechanically, the Hennessy Venom GT comes powered by a big 7.0 L V8 petrol engine. Twin-turbo helps 8-engine blocks to suck a massive amount of air for combustion. This good combination helps to get a power output of 1,244 hp of max power and 1,566 Nm of peak torque. Unfortunately, the Venom GT doesn’t get any electronic gizmos in the transmission of power. It still works on a 6-speed manual transmission system. Being one of the fastest cars in the world, I’m wondering how capable is Venom GT is who had tried to compete with Bugatti that offers tons of electronic aids.

3. SSC Tuatara: 300 mph (claimed)

I’m pretty sure that most of car enthusiasts are aware of SSC also known as Shelby Supercars. The manufacturer came into the spotlight when they build their first speed record by Ultimate Aero.

Soon after, Bugatti Veyron beat the record by reaching 267.856 mph and became the fastest car in the world. But race never ends, this time they have levelled up the game and built an even faster supercar known as Tuatara.

SSC Tuatara

The name “Tuatara” has been taken from a lizard found in New Zealand. Here, the manufacturer resembles the fastest evolving DNA of these reptiles and since the Ultimate Aero, SSC is evolving their Supercars like no-end.

Just like the previous record, the manufacturer will try to beat another world speed record and become the fastest car on the Earth. As of now, the company has a top speed goal of 300 mph or 482.8 km/h.

So, how Shelby Supercars is so confident to reach a top speed of 300 mph or 482.8 km/h?

1. Bugatti Chiron Modified: 304.77 mph

The first fastest production car in Throttlebias’ list is none other than a Bugatti. The sports car has claimed a top speed of 304.7 mph on August 2, 2019. Yes, they did it again, except that the car has received tons of design, mechanical and cosmetic changes.

The speed test was performed by Andy Wallace in Ehra-Lessien, a high-speed track situated in Lower Saxony, Germany.

So, how did they achieve this world speed record?

As I discussed above, the manufacturer has fine-tuned a few things. So, let’s discuss them bit by bit.

Bugatti Chiron Modified

Lighter – This is one of the most important factors in achieving speed records. To do so, Bugatti had removed the passenger seats, rear wing aka air brakes and all electronics monitoring devices.

Aero-modifications – If you look closer you will see that this is not an ordinary model of Chiron. Yes, the manufacturer has performed some design changes. Like, this particular Chiron model is 25 cm longer, gets a new exhaust-pipes design, and etc. This modification has enabled to reduce of the overall drag force and increase in efficiency of the supercar.

Power – This is the heart of any supercar. The manufacturer has upgraded this W16 to 1,578 bhp.

Tyres – They have always been an important factor in top speeds. Usually, the manufacturer uses Michelin Piot tyres to tackle high-speed situations but this time things had to perform beyond performance. The Michelin developed a special set of tyres to cope with this situation. The manufacturer redesigned and reinforced the tyre with the use of carbon fibre and steel. Noticeably, every single detail was x-rayed to make sure that a micro part of the Pilot tyre is in alignment with the mission.

Bugatti Chiron Modified Top Speed & Acceleration
